Laser system AP 530 S for fully automated laser texturing and marking of orthopaedic implants.

The Coherent AP 530 S combines robotic motion, USP laser and user-friendly software to simplify laser texturing of textured implant surfaces.

The new Coherent AP 530 S laser system is a fully automated laser machine for creating precise surface textures and/or permanent markings on implantable medical hardware and other devices with complex shapes. This unique system incorporates an ultra-short pulse (USP) laser and a six-axis robot for total shape versatility and automated operation.

Unlike traditional methods such as sandblasting and other mechanical means that can only produce stochastic surface textures, the AP 530 S provides a deterministic alternative that gives the user complete control over feature size and depth, feature density, spatial distribution and other texture details. With this deterministic control of surface texture, orthopedic implants can be fabricated for improved osseointegration and vascularization characteristics. In addition, laser texturing is a cleaner process that avoids potential implant contamination by sandblasting and other mechanical methods.

The use of a six-axis robotic parts handling system allows texturing and/or marking on selected surfaces of orthopedic devices of any shape or size up to the hip implant. This robotic manipulation offers complete part coverage with enhanced 3D vision for part and process verification. The machine can learn the shape and details of the part using the 3D vision system or work directly from a CAD file. The operator then determines the location(s) and texture details to be applied. Automatic vision registration supports batch part insertion, providing longer unattended process times with complete recording and logging of job results. In addition, the AP 530 S is Industry 4.0 ready and its user-friendly software also simplifies integration into any production environment.

The AP 530 S is available with several different laser types and several different laser power levels. The femtosecond laser is the optimal tool for texturing stainless steel, titanium and other biocompatible metal surfaces. The picosecond laser is recommended for corrosion-resistant black marking, which is ideal for UDI and production tracking. In addition to these USP lasers, the AP 530 S is also offered with a nanosecond laser to support common laser marking and engraving tasks.
