In September, we attended Coherent 's ultrafast laser training in Glasgow, Scotland, right at the manufacturing plant.

In addition to a number of new and useful information, we were able to see real HASS testing of the ultrafast lasers produced there - Chameleon, Discovery, Fidelity.

HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening)

This is an industrial method of product testing used in manufacturing to verify the functionality of a product and involves cyclic loading of the product with high temperature changes and simultaneous vibration. Coherent performs these tests on every product that leaves the manufacturing plant in a temperature range of 0°C to 40°C and an acceleration range of up to 10G.

This process ensures high product reliability and longer product life for users and reduces the cost of warranty service and repairs for manufacturers. An example of this is the Chameleon Discovery laser, where none of the manufactured units have so far been returned to the factory for service repair.

Another example is the impact test performed with the Fidelity HP laser, which you can see at the link here.

HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing)

In addition to this , Cohernet also uses the industrial HALT process to verify the limits of a given product or part of a product, already in the design section of a given system. By subjecting the design to extreme conditions, the limits of the design are verified.
