Most medical devices and components must be permanently marked. Manual and semi-automatic marking is now widely used by all manufacturers in the medical device manufacturing (MDM) industry, which often involves low volumes or even high-value, piece parts. But what about the marking of small parts in high volumes, and moreover when these are low-cost medical devices and parts that cannot cover the high cost of creating accurate and/or highly detailed marks in their price? The solution is to fully automate the marking process with laser marking machines with tray handling and integrated machine vision. Coherent now offers a very cost-effective solution.
LASER MARKING IN MDM
Coherent' s ExactMark range of laser marking machines has recently been expanded to offer this type of economical marking for MDM and other industries with similar challenges, i.e. marking small parts with high production volumes. These machines are available with a choice of several different fiber and solid-state lasers that provide infrared, green or UV output. Such a wide selection of lasers means that almost any metal or plastic used in tooling and disposables can be marked with one of these machines, at a laser wavelength that maximizes the legibility of the mark while preventing unwanted thermal charring or melting of the product.
Machine optics are optimized for marking field sizes to match standard trays, both tray and stack type (e.g. JEDEC). Up to 30 marking trays can be pre-loaded in one unattended cycle. The use of PartVision (lens vision system) in these machines simplifies automatic part alignment and even post inspection. An optional barcode scanner further simplifies the marking process. Subjective marking quality assessment by the operator is simply no longer part of the marking process. All of this leads to lower labor costs, lower marking costs and higher marking yields.
