Coherent, Inc., the company we represent in the Czech Republic, and OSAF (Optical Society Foundation) have decided to launch the Bernard J. Couillaud Award for the first time this year. The award is intended for early career scientists who are engaged in research or application development in the field of ultrafast photonics. Each winner will be awarded a total of US$20,500 (approx. 467,000 CZK), plus a travel allowance of US$5,000 (approx. 114,000 CZK) for a scientific conference hosted by OSA.

The winners have complete freedom of action in their research. In particular, the jury will consider projects that significantly advance basic research or efforts to translate technologies into commercial applications.

The prize is named in honour of a distinguished scientist and innovator in the field of photonics: Bernard J. Couillaud (+ 2017), who was President of Coherent. His significant contributions include, in particular, his collaboration on the development of the Hänsch-Couillaud technique for laser frequency stabilization and continuous and pulsed lasers.
