What is MWIR hyperspectral imaging?

MWIR (Mid-Wave Infrared) hyperspectral imaging combines the benefits of hyperspectral imaging with the specific advantages offered by the mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which typically covers wavelengths from 3 to 5 micrometers. The MWIR range is known for its ability to detect thermal emissions such as heat from objects.

Why choose MWIR hyperspectral imaging?

MWIR hyperspectral imaging is used to identify and classify materials based on their spectral characteristics in the mid-wavelength infrared range.

MWIR is particularly valuable in areas such as the sorting of black plastics, material identification, or the detection of oils and gases that are not distinguishable by any other imaging method. MWIR imaging is also widely used in the metals industry for process and quality optimization and in the defense and security sector, specifically for hazard detection and surveillance.

The Specim FX50 is the only hyperspectral camera on the market that covers the entire MWIR spectral range of 2.7 - 5.3 μm, which is not only crucial for the sorting of black plastics.
