Technology based on a back-illuminated CCD sensor in Frame Transfer arrangement enriched with the so-called Multiplication Register - compared to the classic CCD, the EMCCD contains a so-called "charge preamplifier". In this type of detector, the electron multiplication occurs directly on the chip after the serial register - thanks to this, the signal can be amplified to such an extent that the read noise is overcome and even extremely weak signals can be detected. The high quantum efficiency of EMCCD sensors is complemented by the ability to increase the signal-to-noise ratio by a process called Impact Ionization, referred to as "Gain" in acquisition software. The resulting effect is the capture of tiny signals of units of photons.
