The client specified a spectrometer for the measurement of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence of organic and inorganic substances. The instrument had to have a guaranteed sensitivity greater than 30,000:1, powerful Czerny-Turner monochromators and a spacious sample chamber with access from the front, side, top and bottom. The fluorimeter must also contain the following excitation sources: a xenon lamp, a microsecond xenon lamp and a set of picosecond pulsed diode lasers (at least for 375 nm, 450 nm, 510 nm and 640 nm). Specifying parameters were a fast TE-cooled photomultiplier with a response width <250 ps for measurements in the UV-VIS region and a liquid nitrogen-cooled NIR photomultiplier with sensitivity up to 1700 nm.
