Physik Instrumente (PI) has introduced a new product, the Piezo Gripper P-606.1P, a modular manipulator designed primarily for highly dynamic manufacturing applications in the field of photonics. This new product offers fast response times, nanometer-level precision, and a gripping force of 4 N.
The Piezo Gripper is based on a monolithic flexible structure that provides excellent stiffness and a very low weight of less than 25 grams. Integrated feedback is a standard feature, provided by a precise piezoresistive force sensor. The range of motion of the modular jaws is 500 µm, and their opening width can be continuously adjusted from 0.5 to 1.9 mm.
A key advantage of this solution is the use of piezoelectric actuators without so-called “stick-slip” motors, which completely eliminates the generation of unwanted particles. This simplifies and optimizes deployment in sensitive testing and assembly processes. Unlike competing flexible mechanisms, which often allow for unwanted oscillation of gripped components, the PI gripper provides the maximum stability required for high dynamic acceleration and active alignment.
The new platform is designed for applications that require the secure holding, handling, and positioning of miniature objects during the process. Key areas of application include active alignment and handling of optical fibers, microelectronics assembly, inspection systems, and complex “pick-and-place” tasks for the semiconductor industry.
