The Coherent Diamond 5 µm fully sealed carbon monoxide (CO) laser is a new generation of lasers. It offers improved processing characteristics in applications ranging from cutting and drilling glass, ceramics and foil, to medical and aesthetic fractional skin resurfacing. The unique wavelength of this laser can increase processing efficiency in certain plastic films, polymers, as well as certain dielectrics and copper oxides used in printed circuit boards. It also allows smaller focal sizes to achieve higher resolution.
Although CO lasers were first developed several decades ago, practical limitations on their lifetime and operating characteristics have restricted them to a few specialized low-power devices and laboratory applications. Now, thanks to technological breakthroughs, Coherent has introduced a new class of high-power CO lasers with similar lifetime, reliability and maintenance characteristics to CO2 lasers.
