Safety goggles for UV and excimer laser ablation

Wavelength: 190–355 nm

UV and excimer lasers excel at so-called ‘cold ablation’, in which they use ultrashort pulses to precisely break the chemical bonds of the material without causing thermal damage. The resulting scattered radiation is invisible and poses a critical risk of photochemical damage to the cornea and the eye’s lens. The uncompromising attenuation of these short wavelengths is fully compliant with the EN 207 standard. A major advantage of UV filters is that they feature completely clear lenses, guaranteeing maximum visible light transmission (VLT).

How to read the parameters:
VLT
Visible light transmission (VLT)
Indicates what percentage of the visible spectrum the filter allows to reach the eye. The choice depends on the intensity of secondary radiation at the laser work point:
Low VLT (approx. 10-30%): Essential for applications that generate intense brightness, sparks or plasma (laser cutting and welding of metals). The filter reduces glare from the process, helping to prevent eye fatigue and retinal damage caused by bright white light.
High VLT (above 50%): Suitable for processes without intense brightness (marking plastics, engraving wood). It enables precise visual inspection and reduces eye strain during long-term wear.
Filter colour
Filter colour
The filter colour is determined by the absorption characteristics of the material for specific laser wavelengths.
Selective attenuation: The filter colour is designed to block (absorb) the hazardous laser spectrum while transmitting other parts of visible light.
Effect on perception: Specific filter colours (e.g. dark green or orange) can significantly distort the colours of the surroundings. This must be taken into account when observing coloured status indicators on machines.
Material
Lens material
Determines the mechanical resistance, optical quality and thermal stability of the glasses.
Polycarbonate: A lightweight material with high impact resistance. It is ideal for normal handling. The disadvantage is lower scratch resistance and limited ability to withstand a direct hit from a high-power beam for an extended period of time.
Glass: Provides excellent optical clarity and high resistance. The disadvantage is its higher weight, which reduces comfort during long-term work, and susceptibility to shattering on mechanical impact.
