Coherent DC Series (High-Power Slab CO₂ Laser)

The high-power slab CO₂ lasers of the DC series from Coherent are robust industrial laser sources with output power from 1,000 to 8,000 W. They are designed for the most demanding manufacturing processes. They offer a unique combination of energy efficiency, continuous operational reliability, and minimal maintenance costs. Thanks to the 10.6 µm wavelength, they are an exceptionally versatile tool suitable for a wide range of materials – from metal welding to cutting carbon fiber composites (CFRP), plastics, or glass.

Power from 1 to 8 kW

Massive power reserve for maximum cutting speed and deep welds.

Revolutionary Slab Technology

No turbines, no gas circulation. Unlike Fast Axial Flow (FAF) lasers, maintenance requirements and failure rates are reduced to an absolute minimum.

Beam Quality M2≤1.05

Outstanding focusability ensures the highest possible precision and process efficiency.

Key Features

  • Outstanding power and beam quality: An impressive output power range from 1,000 W to 8,000 W combined with excellent beam quality (M2≤1.05) ensures the highest cutting speeds and deep, clean welds in metal joining applications.
  • Maintenance-free slab resonator: Unique diffusion cooling completely eliminates the need for turbines, blowers, and fast gas flow. The absence of any rotating or consumable mechanical parts means almost zero wear and maximum operational reliability.
  • Extremely low gas consumption: Revolutionary slab technology reduces laser gas consumption to an absolute minimum. The innovative system allows gas refill (Premix) replacement intervals to be extended up to 7 days of continuous operation.
  • Perfect protection of optics against contamination: The fully enclosed resonator configuration (equipped with a durable diamond output window) prevents the ingress of contaminants and significantly extends the lifetime of expensive optical components.
  • High energy efficiency: Operating economy is enhanced not only by the discharge principle itself, but also by the integrated, highly efficient standby mode for minimizing costs during machine idle periods.
  • Flexible and space-saving configurations: The compact design significantly saves valuable floor space in the production hall. Customers can choose from three versions: Standard (separate laser head and control cabinet), Compact (head and control integrated into a single housing), and standalone OEM integration modules.
  • Advanced control and safety: Industrial interface meeting the highest safety standards, with broad support for modern fieldbus systems (EtherCAT, Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP) for seamless integration into Industry 4.0 environments.

Product description

SLAB Technology vs. Fast Axial Flow (FAF)

Coherent DC series multi-kilowatt CO₂ lasers use innovative slab discharge technology (SLAB). This approach represents a technologically much cleaner and operationally more reliable solution than traditional Fast Axial Flow (FAF) gas lasers.

While FAF systems rely on complex, expensive, and maintenance-intensive turbines or blowers that continuously drive gas through the resonator, SLAB lasers use the principle of diffusion cooling. This completely eliminates the need for rotating mechanical parts and huge gas volumes. In practice, this means a dramatic reduction in operating costs, longer service intervals, and elimination of the risk of contamination of the internal optics.

When to Choose a High-Power CO₂ Laser Instead of a Fiber Laser?

Although fiber lasers dominate rough cutting of thin sheet metal, CO₂ technology with output up to 8 kW remains unmatched in many applications:

  • Distortion-free metal welding: CO₂ lasers provide top weld quality (for example in tubes and profiles) with minimal heat input into the surrounding part area.
  • Hybrid operations and composites: A fiber laser (with a wavelength around 1 µm) cannot cut transparent plastics, glass, or wood. A CO₂ laser with a wavelength of 10.6 µm can perfectly weld metal in one production line and then immediately cut carbon fiber composites (CFRP), dashboards, or airbag textiles with absolute precision.
  • Glass and ceramic processing: Ideal for glass melting and thermal surface treatment.

Available configurations

  • Compact version: laser head and control box in one unit
  • Head/enclosure combination
